Camogie makes an appearance on Countdown

Well, there’s a turn-up for the books - the Irish word ’camogie’ made it into that bastion of the English language, Countdown, last week.

Camogie makes an appearance on Countdown

The unusual appearance of an Irish word on the show was spotted by Erin Go Bragh GAA club from Erdington, who posted it to Twitter. We went and hunted it down from last Wednesday's show - and yep, there it is, even if the contestants couldn't gather it themselves.

Poor Alex could only get "Mage" for four, while Jordan managed "Hoagie for six". It took the eagle-eyed ladies in the dictionary corner to educate the British public about the wonderful seven-letter game.

But wait, I hear you say - how can an Irish language word be used on Countdown?

Well, camogie was added to the Oxford English Dictionary last year, defined as "An Irish game resembling hurling, played by women or girls."

Well played.

You can watch the segment on Channel 4's 4oD player here, from about 18:30.
