Shock, horror! Hello Kitty is not actually a cat

Hello Kitty is not a cat.

The shocking disclosure is set to be revealed as Hello Kitty takes LA by storm next month, showcasing at the Japanese American National Museum to celebrate 40 years of existence.

The exhibition will delve into her colourful history as well as divulging in some revelations that will turn your former ten-year-old self’s life upside down.

Christine R. Yano, an anthropologist who has dedicated years studying our favourite cartoon cat character, is currently curating the museum’s retrospective and opened up to LA Times about just who the real Hello Kitty is.

Here’s a few to get the ball rolling…

1. Hello Kitty is not actually a cat

Erm.. She has whiskers, she has cat ears, she’s even got that cute little cat nose but Christine affirmed: “Hello Kitty is not a cat.

“She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature.”

2. Hello Kitty is pretty much British

Her full name is Kitty White and she’s a schoolgirl living in the suburbs of London.

3. Hello Kitty is a Scorpio

Born on November 1st, she’s very much a Scorpio.

4. Hello Kitty like apple pies

Who doesn’t? Her favourite food is her mum’s home-made apple pies and she’s around five apples high (because using the metric system is too mainstream.)

5. Hello Kitty has a twin sister

Really, she does, and her name is Mimmy. They could be fraternal, they could be identical but who cares – there’s two of them.

6. Hello Kitty has a pet cat

Yes, the little girl (who most definitely is not feline) has a pet cat herself called Charmmy Kitty.
