One Direction star Niall Horan has entered into an elite superstar club after hitting 9m followers on Twitter.

The Mullingar teenager is now one of the top 50 most followed people on the planet just behind American rapper Kanye West (43) and British soft rockers Coldplay (41).

At No 44 in the Twitter stakes, the Irish boyband member is trailed by Hollywood badboy Charlie Sheen at No 46 with 8.7m followers and US diva Mariah Carey at 8.6m.

The Midlands singer, who is currently rehearsing for his Take Me Home tour, did a double take yesterday when he discovered he had reached the social networking milestone.

He said: “Holy poop! I just noticed I have 9 million followers! Thank you soo much guys! Best fans on planet.”

His pal and fellow teen heartthrob, Justin Bieber, is No 2 with almost 33m followers but Lady Gaga still reigns supreme with more than 33m followers.

Niall’s bandmate Harry Styles is still ahead of him in the popularity stakes on the social networking site at No 34 in the world with 9.9m followers.

The Irish teen, who shot to fame three years ago on The X Factor, has more followers than Beyonce and Jesse J, and has twice as many followers as Simon Cowell, the man who turned his band into global superstars.

The 19-year-old, who left school just before he finished his Leaving Cert to pursue his music career, even has more followers than the Dalai Lama: 5.9m people follow the Buddhist leader’s tweets.

The social networking power of the Irish superstar is seen by the huge amount of fans following his 17-year-old best friend.

Schoolgoing Sean Cullen’s Twitter account incredibly has a following of 266,000 thanks to his association with his famous friend, which is more followers than Westlife heartthrob Shane Filan with 238,000 twitter fans.

It has taken less than a month for the boyband superstar to clock up another 1m twitter followers and he is expected to hit double digits on the world’s powerful social network site in the next three weeks.

The band, who have amassed 43m followers over the past two years, have cemented their status as the biggest teen idols in the world, with Teen Vogue revealing this week that they are the most searched celebrities on their website.

Meanwhile, figures released last week show One Direction had two albums in the top five highest selling albums in the US last year.
