Scientology the final straw for Holmes in divorce case
Sea Org, as it is known, is where the highest levels of Scientology are taught and children of five can be sent to live there without their parents, with Cruise rumoured to be a big fan.
The website says Holmes and Cruise had been arguing over Suri’s indoctrination into Scientology and that Sea Org was the flashpoint.
Sea Org has been often compared to a boot camp and several ex-Scientologists (including Oscar winner Paul Haggis) have been outspoken against its military-like conditions.
The Freewinds, the massive Scientology boat that was the location of Cruise’s birthday party in 2004, is entirely staffed by Sea Org members. Holmes felt the only way to save Suri from being shipped off to Sea Org was to file for divorce and seek sole legal custody, TMZ says.
Holmes believes Scientology now views her as a threat to the organisation and has put a team on her, with sources saying that as discord grew in recent weeks, Holmes believes Scientologists have been following her moves, especially in New York City.
If Holmes is able to keep the divorce in New York — where courts generally like to award sole legal custody to one parent when there is conflict — proof that she’s being followed could help her case.
Holmes’s friends believe that the actress’s career will be relaunched following her multimillion-dollar divorce from Cruise.
The five-year marriage to Cruise is said to have left her “turning into a robot”.
“Katie felt she was going crazy and was actually turning into the robot that the press always made her out to be. She has a great personality but changed so much when she was with Tom. She became downtrodden and insipid,” said a source.
“Tom is [turning] 50 and when he’s not working he either goes to the gym or hangs out with Scientology buddies,” said another source.
Meanwhile, a fight may be brewing over where the divorce takes place.
