Remember last October when Cillian Murphy and Taylor Swift shared a couch on Well, their fellow guest Domhnall Gleeson made a throwaway comment on the night that has seen everyone on that episode reunite for a new music video.
Swift’s latest video is for from her latest album, and sees her star opposite Gleeson in a 1990s-style production where they play lonely people who meet thanks to a spray bottle of Opalite.
Throughout the video, cameos are made by West Cork's Graham Norton as a salesperson, Lewis Capaldi as a photographer, Jodie Turner-Smith as an aerobic dream girl, Greta Lee as an indie rock goddess and the famously private Cork actor Cillian Murphy pops up as an Opalite spokesperson in posters and he also provides the opening advert VoiceOver in an American accent.
Norton described it as "the thrill of a lifetime and the hardest secret I've ever had to keep."
During their interview on Swift complimented Gleeson’s performance in the sitcom saying she “loved” the show.
Murphy then quipped: “It’s worth watching for Domhnall’s dancing alone”.
To which Gleeson replied: “I’m hoping to get into a Taylor Swift music video”.
Swift credited Gleeson with inspiring the entire shoot with that remark and, in explaining how it came together, thanked her co-stars for going the extra mile to make it happen.
“My favorite part about writing is that first spark of an idea. It can happen at any time, for any reason. The idea for the music video crash landed into my imagination when I was doing promo for I was a guest on one of my favorite shows, ” she wrote on Instagram.
“For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s a UK late night show where Graham Norton (the insanely charismatic and lovable host) invites a random group of actors, entertainers, musicians, etc to be on his show and we all sit there and chat like it’s a dinner party. They even serve wine.
“Anyway. I remember thinking I got ridiculously lucky with the group I was paired with. Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Lee, and Lewis Capaldi. All people whose work I’ve admired from afar.
“When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*.
“And so a week later he received an email script I’d written for the video, where he was playing the starring role. I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too. Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory.
“To my delight, everyone from the show made the effort to time travel back to the 90’s with us and help with this video.”
The Opalite video is out now on Spotify and Apple Music and will be available on YouTube from Sunday.
During the show last year, Swift also invited Norton to her upcoming wedding to Travis Kelce.
