TV Review: Jodie Foster is good, but she can't save True Detective

'Legendary actors and interesting partnerships don’t necessarily make for good crime TV'
TV Review: Jodie Foster is good, but she can't save True Detective

Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country. (Sky Max). Picture source: HBO

True Detective: Night Country (Sky Atlantic and NOW) could do with a bit of daylight. And chemistry between the characters. A snappy plot wouldn’t hurt either. Other than that it’s grand.

It’s set inside the Arctic Circle in Ennis, Alaska, during the perpetual darkness of late December. All the men at a nearby research facility disappear over-night, enter police chief Liz Danvers to solve the case. There appears to be a link to an earlier unsolved murder, where a local woman was brutally stabbed to death. This case is being worked by State Trooper, Evgangeline Navarro, and the two of them team up despite a clear case of bad blood between them.
