The Skin Nerd: Mineral make up is magical and ideal to look good on Zoom calls
As many of us embrace a fully makeup-free lifestyle, there are just as many craving advice on how to look good on Zoom, Hangouts, WebEx and Teams in as short a time as possible. I’m by no means a makeup artist but I can turn out a look if needs require it – I did train in it some time ago – and when it comes to makeup, in my mind, mineral makeup is the ideal.
When we think mineral makeup, it is easy to assume that it's only the typical heavier powders of yonder year and that alone, settling in fine lines and providing as much coverage as if one had taken a quick glance at the foundation rather than applied it. I’m delighted to say that we have more choice of mineral than ever before, and it greatly stands up to its non-mineral counterparts.
The benefits of true (as in pure) mineral makeup are many: it’s naturally antioxidant, tends to be in non-pore-clogging formulations, it’s less irritating to the skin, it gives you additional SPF benefits and it doesn’t dehydrate the skin as some non-mineral products can (unless it contains talc – technically a mineral, but best avoided).
If you are looking for full glam on cam, there’s a trio combo that I adore for a non-cakey full coverage look: begin with a liberal amount of a dewy SPF - I use Skingredients Skin Shield (€42), I’m biased – allow a few seconds, and go in with Sculpted Second Skin Foundation (€27) and a big fluffy brush, working in light layers to build coverage, and top with a mineral powder like the Jane Iredale PurePres sed Mineral Foundation (€35) .
Sculpted Second Skin comes in two finishes – dewy or matte, and I honestly think an oily human could use the dewy version with a dot of powder in the areas that accumulate oil. Second Skin isn’t like a thick layer of camouflage – it's lightweight, it can be buffed into the skin or can be built up for a bit more coverag e. It’s best to work quickly in light layers, as it absorbs and dries down quite quickly, and that’s a huge benefit in my books. A quick note: Aimee Connolly may not stand behind my using a fluffy brush... But don’t worry, she’ll tell me.
If you’re very much a ‘ barely there ’ human, a layer or two of a loose mineral powder alone will help to gently even skin tone and give a bit of coverage to areas of uneven skin tone or blemishes. The Fuschia Loose Mineral Powder (€28.50) can be applied using Fuschia’s signature dip, dip, tap, tap, buff, buff method – dip their fantastic Buffer Brush into the lid, double tap it and gently buff the product into the skin. The more you repeat, the heavier the coverage, all the way up to a full coverage look, so be careful if you want subtle and go slowly.
The main tip that our team makeup Nerd Ben reiterates on mineral powder is that it is slightly magnetic and is attracted to minerals, meaning that you can easily whack on pigment by tapping mineral on to more mineral. Turn your fluffy brush and tap product onto areas that need more coverage with the side of your brush, and then gently buff out the edges.

If you want a glow that would make the North Star envious, you’re looking for Sculpted Beauty Base.
This product is an SPF, primer, and illuminator that contains peptides and hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate the skin. It’s stunning and it is great to find makeup with skincare benefits — however, unless you plan on wearing a full half a teaspoon of it, I’d recommend wearing it on top of your SPF.
For a more subtle look, tap it on to just high points of the face like cheekbones, bridge of nose, cupid’s bow, and chin.
