Photographer to record Covid-19 lockdown with 'Doortraits' in aid of cancer charity

A Dublin photographer and cancer charity have teamed up to create what they hope will be a living and ongoing memorial to Ireland's response to the Covid-19 crisis.

The project - entitled 'Doors Closed Hearts Open' - is the brainchild of Dublin 8 based photographer Katie Kavanagh whose nephew uses the services of the cancer support centre, Purple House.

The project aims to create a gallery of 200,000 Doortraits to support the 200,000 people living with Cancer in Ireland today.

We want to create the biggest gallery of Doortraits in Ireland to document this #Covid19 period that will forever be marked in history.

The idea was started by photographer Katie Kavanagh

The project started when Katie started going door to door to her neighbours and taking their portraits.

Seeing her portraits the Purple House Cancer Support Centre then decided to work with Katie and launch Ireland's biggest ever 'Doortraits Project' to document a 'period that will forever be marked in history'.

The public have know been asked to get involved by taking a photo of their family at their front door.

They can then send the photo to Purple House by email [e-mail] and it will be added to the online gallery.

The charity are asking the public that when they take their photograph they text PURPLE to 50300 and donate €4 to help Purple House to support Cancer patients nationwide or visit the gofundme page here.

Purple House provide:

• Telephone Counselling by a team of Accredited Counsellors & Psychotherapists. (Tel. [phone])
• Hospital Transport for chemotherapy and radiotherapy, to ensure that patients still attend their appointments.
• The Provision of Food Hampers for patients who are isolating. To limit patients visiting supermarkets etc.
• The ongoing provision of a telephone support line (012866966) to ensure families living with Cancer are supported during this worrying time.
