Podcast Corner: Once upon a time in a pre-Oscars podcast

The Oscars take place on Sunday and it seems like it’s Sam Mendes’ 1917 to lose what is proving to be a surprisingly straight forward best picture race.

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood deserves some glory though, as it’s easily one of his best films — and he and the film’s stars have been working the circuit drilling up academy support.

That included the podcast world, where there was plenty of Once Upon a Time... content to consume.

Leonardo DiCaprio (up for best actor) and Brad Pitt (best supporting actor) put in a star turn on WTF with Marc Maron (episode 1,086), and though the grizzled host is at his anxious heights (he says it’s probably the last time he’ll do such an out-of-garage superstar chat), the conversation is fascinating.

From the perspective of long-time WTF listeners, it’s a triumph and a coup, particularly to hear Pitt professing his love of Maron’s short-lived TV show, The Rewatchables, from the Ringer Podcast Network (which is reportedly in talks to be acquired by Spotify), is one of our favourites.

Basically it’s film fans picking one movie and going in depth, from favourite scenes to casting what-ifs to best lines.

To celebrate its 100th episode, Tarantino himself featured for three shows.

Long regarded as a film nerd, he showcases it in full force here, professing his love for Dunkirk, Unstoppable, and King of New York.

Come for his best films of the decade process (we’re still waiting for the full list), stay for his story of how Tony Scott came to direct True Romance after he was refused Reservoir Dogs.

You can also revel in the revelation that Laurence Fishburne turned down Samuel L Jackson’s role in Pulp Fiction.

Whether he gets his Oscar on Sunday or not, there are plenty of people hoping Tarantino gets his own podcast.
