David Gray to headline Musgrave Park next summer
Singer-songwriter David Gray has been announced as the latest act to play Musgrave Park in Cork next summer.
The UK musician will play the stadium on June 20 as part of the twentieth-anniversary celebration of his album 'White Ladder', which is the biggest selling album in Irish history.
Gray has already announced a slew of other concerts to mark the anniversary of the album, including three concerts at Dublin's 3 Arena next April and one in Belfast's SSE Arena in March.
The stadium gig will be the latest in a long affiliation with Cork for Gray. In 1992, He played his first-ever Irish concert in Nancy Spain's pub on Barrack Street in Cork city.
In the decades since, he has returned a number of times, including concerts at Cork Opera House and Live at the Marquee.
'White Ladder' was actually released in 1998 but it took more than two years for it to top the charts. When it did, it became the biggest selling record in Irish chart history.
Speaking at a press launch in the Metropole Hotel in Cork, Gray said he was delighted at how he has been embraced over the years as an adopted son of Ireland.
He said one of his daughters accompanied him to the Live at the Marquee in Cork gig earlier this year and she was "blown away" with the reaction.
"It is moving when everyone was singing along. What happened (in my career) was beyond what was rational. This feels like the right time to celebrate," he said.
MCD plans to host eight concerts in Musgrave Park next summer.
Already announced are Lewis Capaldi (June 18), The Script (June 23), Picture This (June 26) and Dermot Kennedy (June 27).
Earlier this year, the inaugural run of concerts at the stadium saw Hozier, George Ezra, Liam Gallagher, The Coronas, Walking on Cars and Ms Lauryn Hill perform.
Some 215,000 concert-goers are to attend gigs in Musgrave Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh next year with Westlife playing two gigs in the GAA stadium.
Pre-sale tickets for David Gray are available from 9am this Wednesday, November 13. General tickets go on sale this Friday, November 15 via Ticketmaster.ie and www.davidgray.com.
Meanwhile, Liam Gallagher has announced a partnership with a Dublin homelessness charity. Inner City Helping Homelessness (ICHH) has partnered with the former Oasis man in "Part with your Parka", encouraging people to donate warm coats and jackets.
People who donate will be entered into a draw to win two VIP tickets to his shows in the 3 Arena later this month with a Meet and Greet with Liam. There are two pairs of VIP tickets available, one for each night.
Brian McLoughlin of ICHH said: "Liam and his team are fully aware of the homelessness crisis in Ireland and want to do their bit.
"Winter has hit Ireland already so we are inundated with orders for warm clothes from the people we are assisting seven days a week on the streets of Dublin."
Jackets can be brought to ICHH's office on Amiens Street.
