Watch: Roddy Doyle reads from the Barrytown trilogy at reveal of new mural

Writer Roddy Doyle read excerpts from his famous Barrytown trilogy today to launch a new mural in Dublin.

The mural, which was installed at Kilbarrack Station, was created by members of the Reach Out Project, part of the Kilbarrack Coastal Community Programme (KCCP).

The project uses creativity to help people aged 18 to 25 from the Kilbarrack area who are struggling with a variety of psychosocial pressures, such as addiction or mental health conditions.

KCCP created the original murals at the station, which feature scenes from Italia 90. Irish Rail recently asked the group to update the murals.

Italia 90 has been replaced with images from the Barrytown trilogy by Roddy Doyle.

Roddy came along on the day to read from his famous books and meet the people from the community which gave his imagination such rich content for his books.

"We are proud to serve the community of Kilbarrack and I would like to congratulate each member of the Kilbarrack Coastal Community Programme, for their creativity in bringing characters from the Barrytown trilogy to life in such a vivid way," said passenger services manager John Reville/

"It is great that it will be here at the station for many years to come, for our customers to enjoy."

Members of Reach Out worked with internationally renowned Street artist, Solus to come up with the content of the mural.

They also created another mural, featuring famous northsiders, which was also unveiled today.

"It has been an honour working with an artist as brilliant as Solas and the young people in the Reach out programme have really enjoyed it," said Tiernan Williams from KCCP.

These murals will now join the recently created mental health awareness mural that was designed and painted by students from Manor Park School.
