Dublin city councillor thanks Simpsons meme page for helping her get elected

A newly-elected Dublin city councillor has thanked the meme page 'Ireland Simpsons Fans' for helping her to top the poll.

The Green Party's Hazel Chu won more than double the quota in Pembroke and was elected with 4,069 votes, making her the first elected councillor in Dublin City.

On social media yesterday, Ms Chu extended a "massive thanks" to the members of the Facebook group for supporting her campaign.

The fan page, which has almost 92,000 members, has gained popularity in recent years for its hilarious Simpsons memes providing hot takes on current events and politics.

Ms Chu first featured on the page earlier this month, appearing alongside an image from the classic episode in which Ralph presents Lisa with the 'I Choo Choo Choose You' Valentine's Day card.

She said in a post on the group last night that the "Chu Chu train arrived in the station" with her election.

Ms Chu also extended her gratitude on Twitter, saying "you folks probably got half my vote for me".

"And all the 3-12 yr olds who made songs, rhymes, influenced their parents to vote for me. You are the next leaders in the country, call me & I'll canvass for you!" she said.
