Paul Brady & Theo Katzman, Cork Opera House, June 1

The veteran Irish singer has formed an unlikely alliance with the vocalist/guitarist from American funk band Vulpeck.

The Pirates of Penzance, Cork Opera House, June 2

The second of the venue’s concert performances (rather than full-set operas) features music from Gilbert and Sullivan’s timeless operetta.

Forbidden Fruit Royal Hospital Kilmainham, June 1-3

An eclectic mix of headliners ranges from Elbow and First Aid Kit to Jon Hopkins and Skepta.

Michael Dwyer Festival Allihies, Co Cork, June 7

The Beara village comes alive to the sound of traditional music in memory of the late Ardgroom musician.

Malahide Castle Dublin, June 7-22

An impressive roster of gigs includes Snow Patrol (June 7), The Cure (June 8), Mumford and Sons (June 14 & 15), Lana Del Rey (June 22), as well as the likes of George Ezra and Liam Gallagher.

Cork Rocks For Rory, Cyprus Ave, June 8

Sinnerboy top the bill for the annual gathering in memory of the late, great Rory Gallagher.

Metallica, Slane Castle, June 8

The American rockers play their first Irish gig in 10 years at the spectacular natural amphi-theatre in Co Meath.

Support will be from Ghost and Bokassa.

Live at the Marquee, Cork, June 8 - July 8

There’s no sign of the planned Events Centre removing the need for this annual series of gigs, so Corkonians will again be happy to head to the venue for the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Versatile and Toto.

The site near the old showgrounds has been earmarked for development.

Donnelly - 30th Anniversary Retrospective, Cyprus Ave, Cork, June 10

Various veterans of the city’s 1980s music scene will be playing at an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Finbarr Donnelly, former singer with Nun Attax and other bands, and general ace face in post-punk Cork.

Crawford Lunchtime Concert Series, Crawford Art Gallery, Cork

On June 13, Eilis O’Sullivan and Michael McHale will play music by Prokofiev; while the last event in this years series, on June 20,features soprano Mary Hegarty.

Fleetwood Mac, RDS, Dublin, June 13

Even the great Lindsey Buckingham is unlikely to be missed as the rest of the classic lineup play a set from their incredible back catalogue.

Frank Paterson - Ireland’s Golden Tenor, NCH, Dublin, June 15

Anthony Kearns is among the singers in a tribute event to the great tenor who passed away in 2000 at the age of 61.

George Ezra, Musgrave Park, Cork, June 20

No matter where you are in Cork city, you’ll probably hear the mass singalong with the British singer’s mega hit ‘Shotgun’.

Walking On Cars, Musgrave Park, Cork, June 21

The Dingle band will bring the biggest Kerry contingent ever seen in a Cork stadium outside of Munster final day. A decent support roster also features Lewis Capaldi and Tom Walker.

The Cork Proms, Cork Opera House, June 21-23

Part of the city’s Midsummer Festival, the three orchestral concerts are divided into themes of Midsummer (classical), Broadway, and Diva (pop and rock).

Body & Soul, Ballinlough Castle,Co Westmeath, June 21-23

Talos and Modeselektor are among the headliners, but this really is a festival that aims to be about the‘experience’, with other events only now catching up on B&S’s ethos around sustainability and other issues.

Sea Sessions, Bundoran, Co Donegal, June 21-23

The most impressive line-up yet for the northern festival features Sigrid, Clean Bandit, Two Door Cinema Club and Sugar Hill Gang.

The Coronas, Musgrave Park, Cork, June 22

Danny O’Reilly and his perenially popular cohorts return to Leeside.

Liam Gallagher, Musgrave Park, Cork, June 23

Much water has flowed under Patrick’s Bridge since the Manc singer was last in Cork for an Oasis gig in 1996.

The younger Gallagher brother often grabs headlines for the wrong reasons, but his most recent album was well received in 2017, and you’ll also get a smattering of Oasis classics.

Hozier, Musgrave Park, Cork, June 25

It’s been quite a year for the Wicklow wonder, with his Wasteland, Baby album hitting the No 1 spot in the US.

Lauryn Hill, Musgrave Park, Cork,June 26

The former Fugees vocalist comes with a bit of a reputation, but as those who saw her in Dublin last year can testify, when she hits form, the songs from her Miseducation of album still sparkle.

Kaleidoscope, Russborough House,Blessington, Co Wicklow, June 28-30

Billed as “Ireland’s first family camping festival”, this event seems to be aiming at the demographic who brought, or considered bringing their kids to Electric Picnic.

The roster of acts includes Bell X1 and Tom Odell, with specific programmes of entertainment for three younger age groups: 4-8, 8-12 and 12-16.

West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Bantry, Co Cork,June 28 to July 7

Another feast of world-class chamber music, as the West Cork town again punches above its weight with three impressive festivals.

Bandon Music Festival, May 31 to June 2

The Riptide Movement and Mundy are among the headliners, but there are plenty other quality trad and rock acts elsewhere on the bill.

Kíla, Connolly’s of Leap, June 15

Rónán Ó Snodaigh and co are an impressive live band. Their fellow Dublin-born Irish speaker Liam ÓMaonlaí plays the same venue on the subsquent night.

Ashley Campbell, DeBarra’s, Clonakilty, June 26

Ashley Campbell regularly toured with her father Glen Campbell, and the 32-year-old singer and banjo player has kept her career going since his death in 2017.

Arts and Ents

The Gibson, Bequest 1919-2019, Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, Until Jan 12

In 1919, Cork businessman Joseph Stafford Gibson left the Crawford £14,790 (approx €750,000 today) ‘for the furthering of art in the city of his boyhood’.

This exhibition brings together 80 of the works that have been purchased with that bequest, including works by Seán Keating, Jack B Yeats and John Lavery.

The Rape Of Lucrece, Everyman, Cork, June 1

Camille O’Sullivan returns to her native city to perform her moving take on Shakespeare’s tragic poem The Rape of Lucrece.

Before, Everyman, Cork, June 4

Cobh-born actor Pat Kinevane hoovered-up awards for his previous three plays, and returns with a one-man show set in Clery’s of Dublin, on the day the department store shuts.

Lavery and Osborne:Observing life, Hunt Museum, Limerick, June 1 to Sept 30

Both these Irish artists lived around the same time, but it is said they never met. By placing their work side-by-side, this exhibition shows how they were subjected to some of the same artistic influences.

The gallery is also offering a take on the ‘Van Go Yourself’ meme, where people re-enact scenes from paintings and put them online next to the original.

Carlow Arts Festival, June 4-9

Highlights include Max Richter’s eight hour epic ‘Sleep’ , performed in its entirety for the first time in Ireland; and Irish National Opera will host a free outdoor performance of opera arias, duets and ensembles.

Crawford College Degree Show, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, June 7

This annual exhibition of work by graduating students is usually one of the highlights of the art year in Cork. As well as showing off the next generation of emerging talent, it also gives the public a chance to buy work from tomorrow’s stars of the art world.

The Stalls, Cork Opera House, June 12-14

Third and final part of the chamber opera series the venue has been running as part of Cork Midsummer Fest. Light and enjoyable.

Immrama Festival, Lismore, June 12 to 16

The annual festival of travel writing will include visits from Neil Oliver, the historian best known as presenter of Coast on the BBC; and Sarah Outen, the first woman and youngest person to solo-row the Indian Ocean and also the Pacific Ocean.

Banned, Triskel, Cork, June 9-13

A special season of films that the state censor had deemed unsuitable for Irish people when they were originally released. The include A Clockwork Orange, Monty Python’s Life of Brian and Natural Born Killers.

The Unmanageable Sisters, Abbey Theatre, Dublin June 14 to Aug 3

Deirdre Kinahan’s has adapted Michel Tremblay’s much-praised Quebecois comedy, Les Belles-Soeurs, to set it in Ballymun in 1974.

Right Here, Right Now, Dublin, June 13-16

The Ark’s Festival of Children features a series of free events to coincide with Cruinniú na nÓg.

Theatre for an by children, art and play, baby rave, etc.

Evening Train, Everyman, Cork, June 13-23

Mick Flannery’s concept album from 2005 has been turned into a stage production, complete with music that the Blarney singer-songwriter will help play. Part of Cork Midsummer Festival.

A Different Wolf, Cork Opera House, June 16-17

Innovative companies Junk Ensemble and Dumbworld team up for a dance opera that combines visceral movement with music and the voices of Cork School of Music choir and Cór Geal. Cork Midsummer Festival.

Cruinniú na nÓg, June 15, nationwide

Local authorities, RTE and various other state bodies have rowed in behind the second year of an event to encourage participation by children and young people in creative activities in their local neighbourhoods and communities.

Amergin Solstice Poetry Gathering, Waterville, Co Kerry,June 20-23

The annual celebration of poetry at the spot where the Milesian bard who gives the festival its name is said to have come ashore to Ireland.

Cork Midsummer Festival

Running from June 13-23, highlights of Cork Midsummer Festival include:

  • Literature: Dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson tops the bill, and the Crosstown Drift literary strand of the festival will feature the likes of Kevin Barry, Sinead Gleeson and Emilie Pine across a range of events, including a Magical Mystery Bus Tour and a Writers' Dinner at the Crawford Art Gallery.
  • Music: Dublin post-punk heroes The Blades, and nuharp heroines Saint Sister play St Luke's; while top Polish jazz pianist Marcin Wasilewski brings his trio to the Triskel.
  • Theatre: A fest of offering include Mick Flannery's Evening Train at the Everyman, and Enda Walsh's The Small Things at the Waterworks on the Lee Road.
  • Opera/Classical: The Stalls stars Majella Cullagh in the third of Cork Opera House's mini operas that are light enough to appeal way beyond afficionados of the genre. The same venue will also host the Cork Proms, three nights of music broken into the themes of Midsummer (music by Mondelssohn, Mozart and Vivaldi); Broadway; and Diva. (pop, rock and soul). Dance opera A Different Wolf also promises to be intriguing piece, from inovative companies Junk Ensemble and Dumbworld, augmented by 100 choristers from local Cork choirs.

Children take over Crawford

Children will be at the heart of summer at the Crawford Art Gallery over the next few months. A major exhibition, titled 'Seen, not Heard' will show depictions of Irish children throughout the centuries, with works from the 19th and 20th centuries being juxtaposed with contemporary pieces.

As part of this, the gallery is also to become a more child-friendly space, with various events to encourage children into the building for play.

One of the rooms in the Crawford is being retitled Play Space, for puppet-making, animation, drawing, etc. Crawford director, Mary McCarthy, said:

Galleries are often perceived as being serious places where one should not be heard. We recognise play and playfulness as a vital part of life.

McCarthy added that the activities will be aimed at people of all ages, with various artists in situ in the coming months.

"We anticipate a colourful summer and hopefully one where children will be dragging their parents away from the art games."

Memorabilia and interactive displays from the Republic of Ireland’s footballing history.

Clonakilty Street Carnival, June 15

Food is at the top of the agenda for this event in the West Cork town.

Cork Summer Show, Munster Agricultural Showgrounds, June 15-16

Still a must-visit event for many families, it’s a great day out for anyone who is into farm animals and machinery. That’s everyone, right?

Cork Carnival of Science, Fitzgeralds Park, Cork,June 22-23

A free STEM-focused family event that promises experiments, interactive activities, and games to stimulate young minds. Participants include London Science Museum, the W5 Science and Discovery Centre from Belfast, and Imaginosity in Dublin.

Ireland Bikefest, Killarney, May 31 to June 3

All road leads to Killarney for anyone interested in motorbiking next weekend, as afficionados from Ireland and beyond gather for three days of music, bikes and other fun.

Most of the action will be centred around the Gleneagle Hotel and INEC, with Muscular Dystrophy Ireland benefiting as the event’s chosen charity.

Ironman, Youghal, June 23

The famous triathlon brand comes to Ireland for the first time, with thousands of visitors expected for the east Cork town’s hosting of the grueling event for the next three years.

Participants will face a 3.8km swim, followed by an 180km cycle on a course that takes in Midleton, and finally a 42.2km run that finishes in Youghal.
