Brian Barry and Noelle Kelly run a travel blog which shares their journey around the world.
Corkman Brian and Noelle, from Thurles, Co Tipperary, bought one-way tickets to South Korea in August 2009 and have continued their travels ever since.
WanderingOn.com documents their trips across four continents, visiting more than 50 countries and living in 16 locations around the world.
“Travelling slowly, getting off the beaten track, seeking out new adventures, learning about new cultures, trying new food and meeting new people is what keeps our travel lust alive,” they said.
“Typically, we post about the destinations we visit, giving insider information that will help anyone else going there to get the most out of their trip. We also publish a lot of independent hiking and trekking guides for different hikes we have completed to help others with their planning.”
Some of their more memorable experiences include hiking to Everest base camp, driving through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, diving into WWII wrecks in the Philippines and climbing volcanoes in Indonesia.
“We now live full-time as digital nomads, working from our laptops as we go, making an income from our travel blog and other projects online to fund our adventures.
“Social media and blogging have given us the lifestyle that we have today and we wouldn’t change it for anything. Through working online, we have the freedom to create our own work schedule, travel the world, live in new places, pick the best days to get out in the outdoors, and focus on the things that are important to us. Without blogging, we might never have discovered that this kind of lifestyle was even possible.”
They love hearing from people who have followed in their footsteps.
“Sharing our journey and inspiring others to seek out new adventures, try new things and go new places is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding part of running Wandering On. When someone emails you out of the blue to tell you that your article about hiking Everest base camp independently helped them achieve their dreams is a great feeling — we cherish those moments, where our experience has benefitted someone else and allowed them to do something amazing.
“If we had our time back, we probably would have started blogging sooner. Making the decision to start a blog is one thing but following through and actually putting in the time is where the journey really begins.”
