Online Lives: Megan Kessie - 'Writing my blog became an escape'

Beauty blogger Megan Kessie, from Dublin, started blogging at makeitupmegan.ie in 2015, while she was working in healthcare, and she now finds herself working in PR, as a result.

“Things have completely changed since I started blogging and I now work in PR, along with working as a social media consultant for brands and managing their various online accounts,” Megan says.

“When I started my blog, I was working in healthcare. It was tough and writing my blog became an escape. After a few months, I realised my passion was based in the online world and I actually quit my job to do a PR and marketing internship.

“My entire career has changed drastically from what it was three years ago and I owe that, in part, to social media.”

She shares beauty and fashion tips on her website and social media accounts.

I post mainly about beauty and fashion. I love makeup and am really into skincare. I’m always trying new products and not a lot end up making it to the blog.

The 24-year-old finds Facebook is best for sharing her posts.

“Facebook would definitely be my bigger platform. For instance, a video I put up early this year, with one of the new, Anastasia Beverly Hills palettes, was huge for me reaching over five million people and it’s great to see the comments underneath and people tagging each other.”

Megan is keen to show reality in her posts.

“I’ve started recently to share a lot more of what I’m wearing. For so long, I think we’ve been inundated with beautiful girls in our feeds that create an image that is unattainable for most. I’ve become more comfortable with my body and am happy showing what I’m wearing and how I style clothes to suit my curves.”

Meeting and befriending other bloggers has been a highlight for Megan, despite the industry receiving some criticism recently.

There has been a lot of negative comments about Irish bloggers recently, which I hate. The actions of a few have tarred the names of many.

“I have met so many supportive and lovely people through blogging. Two of my closest friends are bloggers and we wouldn’t have met if we weren’t blogging. I’ve had so much support from my friends within the community and will gladly help anyone out.

“There are always a few bad eggs, the ones only in it to gain more followers and make more money, but, on the most part, it is a big support group.”
