Morning star: Newstalk's Breakfast Briefing presenter Andrea Gilligan
It's been a huge year for broadcaster, Andrea Gilligan, who has been tasked with fronting two new programmes for national radio broadcaster, Newstalk, writes Esther McCarthy.
But the Co Donegal native is mindful that it’s vital to make time for fitness and healthy eating.
Thrilled to learn that her Sunday morning show, Between the Lines, has been nominated for an IMRO radio award for current affairs, Andrea is also host of a newer programme, Breakfast Briefing. It runs the top news stories of the morning and aims to set the agenda for the day.
“It’s an absolutely amazing opportunity, to have a daily morning show, and I’m really grateful to management for giving me the opportunity,” she says.
But the show’s 6am start means that the alarm goes off at 4am for Andrea, and she has been getting advice from colleague (and former breakfast presenter), Ivan Yates, who believes a healthy diet and exercise are key to longevity in early morning broadcasting.
“My alarm goes off at 4am and once it goes off, I’m up and in my taxi by 4.25. I have a really quick turnaround time. However, I’m a bit of a night owl, so I’m working on going to bed earlier. Fortunately, I’m the kind of person who can sleep any time, any place.”
Since she started working early mornings, Andrea has redoubled her efforts to look after herself and focus on exercise and healthy eating.
Not good! I’ve really gone to the dogs. I need to get back on track. I was doing well enough last year and I had a good diet. I started training with Underdog Boxing, in Dublin, doing the strength-and-conditioning programme and I noticed a difference, but I really need to get back at it.
What are your healthiest eating habits?
I drink loads of water. It’s probably the only good habit that I have. I always seem to be on the go and busy, so I’m not that bothered about cooking every day. I take the lazy option. I’m a big fan of batch cooking. I just cook and freeze. I just find it’s super-handy, when I haven’t time.
Wine and chocolate. I love nothing more than meeting up with friends and having a glass of white wine. And I’ve an extremely sweet tooth.
Not a lot, to be honest. I’ve no bother sleeping. Aside from stress and worry, but that’s only from time to time.
How do you relax?
I love to get out for a run. It’s probably more of a walk/run/jog. I find fresh air helps me to relax. And socialising. I love meeting up with friends, going for dinner, and going out for drinks.
Depending on the mood I was in, I’d probably invite Elton John, because you’d definitely want some music to start. The Obamas, particularly Michelle. Barack can be her plus one. The Beckhams (but no watermelon birthday cake). Harry and Meghan. Morgan Freeman (I just think he has the most amazing voice).
I’d probably have Britney, and Westlife reunited (for the evening entertainment).
I love the smell of coffee, particularly early in the morning.
I’ve a long list, so how long have you got? If I could get in better shape, I’d be happy enough.
There’s probably no point in me mentioning my height, 5ft 8½in. I’m tall, but there’s nothing I can do about that.
It’s probably been a while. I’m not usually a very emotional person.
Bad time-keeping! I’m really punctual and that’s probably due to work. I’ve spent the last 10 years living my life by the clock, running in to read news bulletins and meeting deadlines. It’s definitely crept into my personal life.
I’m extremely impatient and hate having to wait. I need to work on that.
No, I don’t pray. I’m not very religious.
I love catching up with friends and family. Going for dinner and drinks, having a good catch-up, and a good laugh.
