Runner of the week: Superwoman runs for CUH

Each week we profile one of the runners taking part in the ‘Irish Examiner’ Cork City Marathon on June 3.

Some heroes don’t wear capes, but Dolores Duffy will be donning both cape and costume for this year’s Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon, writes Denise O'Donoghue.

This 50-year old marathon-lover will be completing her 65th marathon dressed as Superwoman.

She hopes to earn a Guinness World Record for ‘Fastest Female to Run a Marathon Dressed as a Film Character’.

“It’s a bit of fun and hopefully it will highlight the great work done by the charity.”

Dolores will be running in aid of Cork University Hospital’s intensive care unit. “They do a lot of good work,” she said.

She wanted to raise funds for a local charity and says the CUH intensive care unit benefits thousands of members of her community.

Dolores is also this year’s face of the CUH Charity’s “Run for ICU at CUH” initiative, which aims to encourage runners to sign up for the Cork marathon to support the ICU at the hospital.

Dolores enjoys running and runs between nine and 11 marathons a year. Just last weekend, Dolores was the first woman home at the annual Tralee International Marathon.

“I enjoy running long-distance. My ambition is to complete 100 marathons.”

Cork’s very own Superwoman will need to beat Rebecca Cesar de Sa’s London 2017 record of three hours, 16 minutes and 19 seconds.

“Two runners will have to go along with me to witness it, we’ll have to send of photos and statements from the organiser. There’s lots of paperwork.”

However, after completing the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon in 3 hours and 9 minutes last year, this Glounthaune native is confident her attempt will be successful. “Hopefully the record won’t be broken in the meantime.”
