A Specsavers driver has been told they "should’ve gone to" Specsavers after crashing a company car into a lamp post.

The crash, in the suburb of Woolton in Liverpool, prompted a barrage of jokes and puns on social media, with Liverpool City Council posting a photograph of the incident with the hashtag "#ShouldveGoneTo".

The optician launched its well-known "Should’ve Gone to Specsavers" advertising campaign in 2002, which shows people in scenes of bizarre accidents before joking that they would benefit from a pair of Specsavers glasses.

Liverpool City Council said nobody was hurt in the crash, which happened around Tuesday lunchtime on the junction between Menlove Avenue and High Street.

The white company car appeared to have veered off the road before crashing into a street lamp post, which was partially knocked off its hinges.

"A Specsavers Healthcall vehicle driven by one of the team was involved in a collision on Tuesday 16 January in Menlove Avenue, Liverpool," said a Specsavers spokesman.

"We are relieved to hear that no-one involved was injured and we would like to thank all those who helped at the scene."

The photo of the incident, posted on Twitter by Liverpool City Council on Tuesday evening, prompted many Twitter users to offer their own jokes and puns.

One Twitter user quipped "what a spectacle!", whilst another said they "didn’t see that one coming".

Similar jokes were made in 2013 when a silver Ford smashed into the front window of a Specsavers shop in Sevenoaks, Kent.
