12-year-old accidentally runs NY half-marathon

Twelve-year-old LeeAdianez Rodriguez from Rochester, NY, was running a little late when she showed up to what she thought was the starting line of the 5k run (a little over three miles) she had been training for for two months.

She was rushed to the starting line and someone told her to jump in with a group of runners

Off they went but, after four miles, Lee realised the race was taking longer than she was used to and she asked someone how long the race was.

"I asked her how long it was and she said, 'Like 13 miles,' and that's when it struck me I was in the half-marathon instead of the 5K," Lee told a local new outlet.

Yup, Lee had ended up in the wrong race - she was actually running in the Flower City Half Marathon organised at the same time.

Meanwhile, her mother Brendalee Espada was becoming worried as she waited at the 5k finish.

"It was 1:30, she isn't crossing the line, the half marathon people are coming already and less from the 5K are coming," Brendalee said.

Police and organisers were beginning the search for Lee when she came across the finish line.

“They told her, ‘Your family is looking for you at the finish line,’” said Espada. “But she said, ‘I just have to finish.’

"The announcer called out my name - they were looking me, and I started sprinting at the end," said Lee.

“They told her, ‘Your family is looking for you at the finish line,’” Espada told Buzzfeed News.

“But she said, ‘I just have to finish.’

"Then I see her with a medal and I thought, 'Oh my gosh, she ran the other one, like for real. She is just 12-years-old and she decided to just keep running and not giving up."
