Parody police account puts savvy Facebooker in serious trouble

A parody Facebook account could spell jail for one Ohio man who created a replica page of his local Police Department’s social media account.

The satirical account, created on March 2, was used to give out ‘derogatory’ and ‘inflammatory’ information that the Police Department were less than impressed with.

Anthony Novak, 27, the suspected mastermind behind the page, was arrested after the page posted advice to the public stating it was illegal to help the homeless and offering free abortions to teens.

The Facebook page also advertised a ‘Pedophile Reform event’.

The page lasted about three weeks before being shut down by Facebook last Friday after the Police Department contacted the social media giant about the account.

The Police then posted on their real account to disregard anything seen on the fake account.

The story doesn’t end there as the incident seems to have inspired the local population with several parody accounts popping up on the Social media site.

Accounts such as ‘For Real Parma Police Department Page’, ‘City of Parma Police’, and The Parma Police Department’ have taken the torch from the original satirical account and continued his not-so-good work.

It is not clear if any further arrests have been made with relation to the new pages, however one thing is certain, Anthony Novak now faces charges for his alleged creative social media satire and his first court appearance is next Monday.

His Lawyer David Brown has called it ‘an unusual case’.

That’s one way of describing it…
