Mother challenges shop assistant for saying her daughter needed Spanx to wear a certain dress

One women's account of her teenage daughter's experience trying on a dress has gone viral after she posted it to Facebook.

Megan Harris from Kansas and her daughter Lexi were in Dillards department store looking for dresses for Lexi's upcoming dance when Megan asked her to try on one that that was not her usual style.

And then the shop assistant chimed in with some advice.

"Right after that, you entered and told my daughter she needed to wear SPANX if she wanted to wear this dress. I told my daughter to go change. I told you that she was just fine without SPANX. You continued to argue with me. We left soon after."

Megan was moved to tell the story on Facebook as she felt that the woman was out of line.

"I wish I had told you how many girls suffer from poor self image and telling them they need something to make them perfect can be very damaging. Girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are perfect because that is how God made them. If they feel good in a dress, that is all that should matter.

"My daughter is tall, she swims, runs, dances and does yoga. She's fit. She's beautiful. She did not need you telling her that she is not perfect. I hope this is shared and gets back to you so that you should not say something like that to a girl ever again. You never know what negative or positive thoughts they are thinking about themselves.

Sincerely,

Mother of a beautiful girl"

The Facebook post has now been shared over 68,000 times.

Some commenters have countered that Spanx are often used by women of all sizes to create a seamless line - smoothing out any lines and bumps.

But most agree with Megan, calling her words 'inspirational'. .

"How terrible of that women. I'm glad that Lexi has a mom that will prevent her from ever feeling like she is anything less than perfect. Shame on people who shame other people's bodies. Lexi looks beautiful in that dress!!!"

"She's gorgeous!!! F*ck that stupid lady, she doesn't know what she's talking about!"

To those worried that Megan had mortified her daughter on Facebook, she posted again saying that she had Lexi's permission.
