VIDEO: Hoverboard blamed for destroying family home

The Horne family, from Louisiana in the US, had a lucky escape after buying one of this Christmas’ most sought after gifts.

Mother Jessica bought her delighted 12-year-old son Hayden a hoverboard from Amazon, but little did she know the chain of events it would trigger.

Also known as a self-balancing scooter, the hoverboard was a Fiturbo branded product according to Jessica.

Hayden was so thrilled when it arrived at their Lafitte home on the night of November 20 that his mother let him use the gift a bit early.

After riding the hoverboard until the battery started to die out, Hayden put it on the charger it came with and it was then the trouble began.

“As I walked past his room I saw it began to shoot sparks,” said Jessica on her GoFundMe page.

“Within seconds it (the hoverboard) was in flames, within minutes the entire room was in flames.”

The family were lucky to escape in time, although their dog needed to be rescued from the building by firefighters. The dog had to receive oxygen after the fire and has now recovered from the event.

The Hornes lost their home in the fire and are now forced to live in rent accommodation. Jessica now plans to sue the hoverboard manufacturer.

An investigation is underway into the official cause of the fire and the family are awaiting the results from the Louisiana Fire Marshal.
