VIDEO: Russian public doesn’t react well to two guys pretending to be gay
With gay marriage being legalised recently in Ireland and the US, two Russian men decided to see what it would be like if they held hands around Moscow.
Russia banned the promotion of ‘non-traditional sexual relationships’ to minors in June 2013, which makes it effectively illegal to speak in favour of LGBT rights, hold pride events or even say that LGBT relationships are the same as heterosexual ones. People who contravene this law will face heavy fines.
To test the perception of gay relationships in the country, two guys decided to hold hands while walking around the Russian capital with a hidden camera.
It’s safe to say that it didn’t go well…
Homosexuality was only removed as a mental illness in Russia in 1999 and it is easy to see from watching the video why hate crimes against the LGBT community are widespread in the world’s largest country.
