We're used to seeing Crimecall presenter, Philip Boucher Hayes, report about crimes on our TV screens, but viewers tonight will get to see him actually in the midst of one. Well, not a real one.

The producers of the monthly series arranged for a man to push a woman and steal her handbag in order to test the Gardai's new facial recognition technology, called EvoFIT.

However, they weren't prepared for what Philip did next as he set off after the escaping mugger shouting "Sunshine, put the bag down" and stopped him from getting away.

Viewers will be able to see it in full in tonight's Crimecall (10.15pm, RTE One), but Philip told Ryan Tubridy on 2fm today: "They didn't think this through really. It has only added to the humiliation offering me underpants to wear over my trousers and a little red cape."

"It has beaten every last little bit of chivalry out of me. From here on in if I see anyone in trouble I'll look around for the camera crew first and suss out the lay of the land and then I'll turn around and maybe think about helping."
