Man with neurological disease tells wife 'I Love You' for first time in 15 years

A man who has not been able to speak since 1999 because of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has been able to tell his wife "I love you" out loud for the first time in 15 years.

ALS is a disease of the nervous-system, and it robbed Don Moir of the ability to speak after he was placed on a ventilator.

Don, who was diagnosed with ALS in March 1995, has been able to use a custom-designed speaking computer designed by Not Impossible Labs, a not-for-profit body which "crowd-solves" healthcare problems.

Previously, Don had communicated with his wife, Lorraine, by picking out individual letters from a letter board.

Volunteer Not Impossible Labs engineer Javed Gangjee, who is also associated with the SpeakYourMind Foundation, has worked with Don for almost a year to create a digital letter board that uses a laptop and a device to track Don's eye movements.

Don used the new digital letter board to write his wife a love letter which was "read" out loud to her.

My Dear Lorraine,

I can't imagine life without you. You have made the last twenty-five years fly by and the last twenty with ALS more bearable. I am looking forward to the next twenty five years.
