What would it look like if the Rosetta Comet landed on Cork?

Pretty damn cool, as it turns out.

What would it look like if the Rosetta Comet landed on Cork?

In advance of the momentous landing of the Philae space probe on Comet 67P, the European Space Agency released images of the comet superimposed over different European cities to give people a sense of the huge size of the comet.

Unfortunately for us, no Irish cities were included so how were we supposed to relate?

Well, now thanks to photographer Darren Forde, we can fully appreciate the immensity of the comet and the difficulty of the project - Darren has landed the comet right on top of Cork City.

We know everyone in this picture is being squashed but how cool is that?

Darren explains the distances involved in this image:

“Coming in at approximately 4.1km wide, the comet would stretch roughly from County Hall to Pairc Uí Chaoimh, dwarfing the Elysian and the famous Shandon bells.

"Looking like something more from 'District 9' than Douglas and causing nightmares for the road maintenance crews of Cork City Council, I reckon the comet wouldn't last too long before someone planted a red and white flag on the top.”

Now we know non-Corkonians might not fully get the scale of the thing but we’re sure it won’t be long before some clever folks in other Irish cities make their own versions.

And then we’ll all know what it would look like if a comet crash-landed in our city and crushed us all to death.

Yay!
