Café offers 'discounted' coffee in return for good manners

Kylie Pickett and her husband Kev Chilver own the Seven Mile Beach Kiosk in Gerroa, New South Wales and they have come up with a nifty little marketing idea to promote good manners in their coffee shop.

At the Seven Mile Beach Kiosk, a simple ‘please’ or a pleasant ‘good morning’ is said to lead to savings on your morning caffeine fix.

Wanting to bring a smile back to their customers faces, the couple ran with the idea when it was given to them by an employee and they say customer attitude has improved dramatically.

“People have been saying keep the change, they've been a lot nicer and we saw a change in the customer,” said Kylie speaking to the Daily Mail Australia.

“People tended to come in and say ‘Coffee thanks’ and there was no ‘Hi, how are you?’.”

It is nice to see the sign has worked with customers complying en masse - but there was always going to be a few chancing their arm.

“We have some people who try it on and say ‘please’, ‘thank you’ and ‘have a nice day’ and then ‘can I have it for three dollars?’. It gives people a smile and starts their day off,” said Kevin.

Now, for clarity, a large coffee really only costs AUS$4 (€2.80) at the Seven Mile Beach Kiosk, the whole point of the sign is just to encourage people to be courteous.

“It’s just put up there as a gimmick to cheer people up. We never enforce it. We couldn't take it that far,” added Kevin.

This comes in the wake of a Kerry café decision to put up a sign banning

However, we prefer the more positive mindset this sign promotes.

At breakingnews.ie make a point of saying “thank you” to our coffee machine in the morning and we wonder will any Irish cafés follow Seven Mile Beach Kiosk’s lead?
