Tweeting dog has lucky escape after falling 300 feet into the sea

When you go away on your honeymoon, you'd like to think that you can just relax and leave all the worries of everyday life behind after the stress of the wedding.

Well unfortunately for Deidre O' Shaughnessy and her new husband Brian Stokes, their romantic trip to Florence after their wedding last week was interrupted by some dramatic news from home -their dog had decided to become somewhat of a celebrity.

Vimes - who has his own Twitter account - had a very lucky escape on Sunday while being looked after by Deidre's parents.

The little rascal was out for a walk along the cliffs in Kilkee, Co Clare when he lost his footing and fell 300 feet into the sea below.

Incredibly, he managed to avoid hitting the cliff or any rocks on the way down.

Deidre's parents alerted the Irish Coast Guard and the Kilkee volunteer boat was launched. The crew members initially couldn't find Vimes in the water but, luckily, he had managed to swim to the rocks at the base of the cliff where he was rescued about an hour after the alarm was raised.

A spokesman for the Kilkee Coast Guard told the Clare Herald that Vimes was unharmed but glad to be rescued.

“We made a plan to recover the dog and did so successfully. The dog didn’t appear to be hurt but was happy to see us."

"We brought him back to our base in Kilkee and reunited him with his owners,” he said.

Deidre - who is the editor of Cork 96FM’s Opinion Line - posted updates of Vimes' adventures on Twitter, thanking the Coast Guard for rescuing him.

Some other Twitter users also had a bit of fun with the now-famous pooch.

Hopefully, Vimes will keep his head down for the next few days so his owners can enjoy the rest of their honeymoon in peace.

Aw, all tuckered out after his adventures.
