The German Lotto numbers were 9, 10, 11, 12, 13

(and 37, but shhhhh).

The German Lotto numbers were 9, 10, 11, 12, 13

Huh.

Germany's Lotto 6 Aus 49 yesterday had a bit of an odd set of winning numbers: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 37, and the bonus number 3.

That's pretty unbelieveable, even if 37 does kind of ruin things. Here's the footage of the unbelieveable draw:

Now, here's the thing. The odds of that combination of numbers coming up is no more or less than any six-number combination - that is, one in 15,537, 573.

The instinctive response that this is somehow less likely is wrong – the balls with these numbers on them are just as likely to be popped out as any other set of balls.

Now, they came out in the order 9, 37, 13, 12, 10, and 11 - but that doesn't matter in lottery games, as we know. Someone who wrote down 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, would have matched five numbers.

No-one got the jackpot, but three people matched six numbers (winning €262, 713), and 1,165 matched five.
