This is a really great idea.

Converted buses to provide showers for San Francisco homeless

A woman in San Francisco has come up with a brilliant way to help improve the lives of homeless people on the streets of San Francisco.

Doniece Sandoval founded Lava Mae, an organisation which converts old buses into shower facilities for the homeless.

Speaking to CBS, Sandoval explained what facilities will be available in the mobile shower buses.

"Each of our buses has two complete bathrooms with a shower, sink, toilet and changing room," said Sandoval.

"It's been in idea stage for so long, to actually see the result is unbelievable."

The shower buses use city fire hydrants for their water supply - they've worked out a deal with the city to use and pay for the water.

There are around 3100 people living on the streets of San Francisco, with only 7 facilities where they can shower. Each one of the buses can accommodate up to 130 showers a day alone.

However, it is pretty expensive to convert the buses - around $75,000 per bus.

The buses will be available to the public on saturdays from 7am-12pm, starting on June 28. The non-profit hopes to expand to several locations across the city on different days.

Sandoval believes the scheme will have a noticeably positive impact on people's lives:

"With hygiene comes dignity, and with dignity comes opportunity."

Simple but effective. We like it,
