Woman gets surprise after shop-bought egg hatches

This woman got an unexpected extra (we are really trying to resist egg-related puns here) when she bought a box of quail eggs from her local Waitrose supermarket.

Mandy Clayton from Surrey bought the 12 free-range eggs for a barbecue over the weekend. They didn't use them all so she left the remaining four eggs on her kitchen worktop.

When she went back to use them three days later, and to her surprise, she only found three eggs - and a live quail chick.

Mandy - who keeps chickens at home - decided to keep the chick and bought four other quails to keep the baby bird company.

The five birds now all live happily in her back garden.

She's named the new chick Rose - after Waitrose.

Those must have been some seriously fresh eggs.
