Phone a friend? This 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' contestant called Angela Merkel

When German politician, Wolfgang Bosbach, found out he was going to be on the celebrity version of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?', he probably thought he could do a lot worse than having the German Chancellor as his 'phone a friend'.

After all, Chancellor Angela Merkel is an intelligent lady who probably stays calm under pressure.

When Wolfgang couldn't answer the €500,000 question - a tricky one to do with East German washing machines- he decided to use his lifeline. Unfortunately, Merkel was of no help at all - because she didn't answer her phone.

Bosbach tried to reach her twice but it went to her voicemail both times.

At the end of the show, Bosbach received a text message from Merkel apologising for not answering and he walked away with €125,000 for charity.

Merkel probably has more important things to worry about - like the European economic crisis, but we bet Wolfgang wished he had picked someone else to call!
