Dublin Zoo welcomes new baby giraffe

Dublin Zoo are celebrating their new arrival this week- a baby giraffe. The Rothschild giraffe calf was born last Wednesday, May 7 at 11.10pm to mum Maeve.
The as-yet unnamed baby made his first public appearance in the African Savanna enclosure on Monday. Although he's only a few days old, being a giraffe and all, he's already very tall - standing at 1.7 metres and weighing around 70kg.

Gerry Creighton, operations manager at Dublin Zoo said: "The calf was born on Wednesday night in the giraffe house, with the other female members of the herd present. Maeve is an experienced mother and is very attentive towards the calf.
“He took his first steps outside into the African Savanna to meet the rest of the herd yesterday and it could not have gone better. The calf was also introduced to his father Robin for the first time this week."

Dubln zoo now have nine giraffes in their herd. The Rothschild giraffe is one of the most threatened of the nine giraffe sub-species with fewer than 670 remaining in the wild.

There seems to be a baby boom happening at Dublin zoo at the moment. There are three Indian elephants currently expecting calves, with the first one due any day now.
You know what that means? More cute baby animal photos!
