Stunning photo shows off the Donegal night sky in all its glory

This is the amazing shot produced by Donegal photographer Rita Wilson last night.

The picture highlights the beautiful night sky around the Fanad Lighthouse in northern Donegal.

It comes from 8 long frame shots taken by Rita over 7 minutes, each taking about 30 seconds in duration and you can’t help but fall for the stunning view.

Rita’s Facebook page is full of pictures like this and she certainly has a flair for capturing the wonders of the cosmos.

Wilson a native of Magherabeg, Downings, Donegal regularly ventures out to take these shots and we a glad she is such a night owl.

We asked about her passion night time photography in the region her enthusiasm shines through:

“I love the challenge and discovery with this type of photography. I look at the night sky in wonder of what I'll capture next on my camera.

“It makes me think on how small our planet is and how long it has taken for the light of those stars to reach my camera’s sensor. Standing beneath the Milky Way has always been a beautiful sight, if you were lucky enough to find dark skies on a clear night.

“Here in Donegal I am lucky not to live in heavily light polluted areas. Night sky photography is a consuming passion, the passion of the unknown and the cosmic wonder of the night sky. Photographing at night opens up a whole new world of possibilities,” said Mrs Wilson.
