Today's TV tips

SINGING CONTEST: The Voice of Ireland (RTE One, 6.30pm – 8pm)

It’s week three of the Battles when our coaches pit their acts against each other.

They must then decide which of the two they will take through to the Live Shows. But they won’t have to make that decision on their own.

Helping Dolores make her decision will be Hothouse Flower Fiachna Ó Braonáin, in Bressie’s corner is Sarah Harding, Jamelia has asked friend Courtney from girl band Stooshie to help her decide and Kian has asked X Factor winner Matt Cardle to join him for the Battles.

Despite the pairings being incredibly strong our coaches still have to send someone home but there’s a catch! if another coach likes that act they can steal them for their team!

DANCING COMPETITION: Dancing on Ice (TV3, 6.15pm – 7.45pm)

Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley host the Semi Final and with only three places in the final up for grabs the competition will be intense.

Each of the four remaining stars will perform twice to persuade the Ice Panel and the viewers at home that they deserve a Semi Final place – they’ll put every bit of emotion and skill into a skate with their partner and also a flying routine.

Expect passionate performances and dazzling airborne moves from each celebrity.

We’ll also see a fabulous performance from Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, skating an updated version of their classic number ‘Let’s Face The Music and Dance’.

IRISH MUSIC COMPETITION: Meteor Choice Music Prize (RTE Two, 10.25pm – 11.30pm)

The Voice‘s Eoghan McDermott and Niamh Farrell from Irish Indie band Ham Sandwich present highlights from the Meteor Choice Music Prize live event in Vicar Street.

Watch live performances from, Girls Names, Little Green Cars, Mano Le Tough, O Emperor, Lisa O’ Neill, Villagers and Bell X1.

Eoghan and Niamh will present pre-recorded VT’s from all the nominees, plus exclusive interviews on the night and coverage of the final award presentation, when one of ten acts will win this year’s Meteor Choice Music Prize.

The 9th annual Meteor Choice Music Prize will once again celebrate and acknowledge the best in Irish recorded music.

The prize has become one of the highlights of the Irish music calendar since its inception in 2005 and is awarded to the Irish Album of the Year, as chosen from a shortlist of ten releases by a panel of eleven Irish music media professionals and industry experts.

FILM: Vertigo (BBC2, 1.55pm – 4pm)

(1958) Scottie, a San Francisco police officer, quits the force after a rooftop incident leaves him with a debilitating fear of heights.

However, he turns detective once again when an old college friend asks him to keep an eye on his beautiful but troubled wife Madeleine, who appears to have developed an unhealthy fixation on a tragic event from her family’s past.

Scottie falls obsessively in love with her, and when it appears he has failed in his mission to save her, he begins to search for someone he can mould into Madeleine’s image – a quest which is to have devastating results.

This is one of the best suspense thrillers ever made and a fascinating study of one man’s obsession.

James Stewart gives one of his most intense performances, while Kim Novak shines as the object of his affection; the moment her ghostly character emerges from a bathroom is one of the most haunting in screen history.

Starring: James Stewart, Kim Novak, Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore

Salt (Channel 4, 9pm – 11pm)

(2010) Angelina Jolie stars as the eponymous Evelyn Salt, a respected CIA agent whose life and career are turned upside down when a man claiming to be a Russian defector walks into her office and identifies her as a sleeper agent who has been trained by the KGB to start the third world war.

Stunned by this revelation, Evelyn goes on the run. But is she trying to prove her innocence, or does she really have something to hide?

Jolie is of course the star of the show here; her performance is brilliantly convincing and while Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Daniel Olbrychski make for great co-stars, the actress should have won an Oscar for this performance.

The whole thing looks smart, with a so-so script and is packed to the rafters with action scenes – what’s not to like here if you’re after easy Sunday night viewing?

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Olbrychski
