The motion picture academy is withdrawing an original song Oscar nomination after it discovered the composer emailed members of the group’s music branch to make them aware of his submission during the voting period.

Bruce Broughton, who composed 'Alone Yet Not Alone', from the film of the same name, is a member of the music branch’s executive committee and a former governor for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said using a position within the organisation to personally promote one’s own Oscar submission created the appearance of an unfair advantage.

An additional nominee will not be named. The other original song nominees are 'Happy' from 'Despicable Me 2'; 'Let It Go' from 'Frozen'; 'The Moon Song' from 'Her'; and U2's 'Ordinary Love' from 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom'.
