They came, they saw… and the brave among them surfed.

Daredevil big wave riders from around the world flocked yesterday to Mullaghmore Head in Co Sligo, where Storm Christine whipped up the waves to almost 12m (40ft) in height - and made for the mother of all tow-in sessions.

Mullaghmore Head is regarded as the most famous big wave surf spot in Ireland, with "a wild righthand reef break that can only be challenged in high tide".

This clip nicely captures the scale of the waves as seen from the onlookers' vantage point onland.

Meanwhile RTÉ's north-west correspondent Eileen Magnier was also on hand to capture the action for this report on last night's news.

"Is it dangerous?" she asked Portuguse big wave specialist Nic von Rupp.

"Totally," he replied nonchalantly. "Got three lifejackets on."
