Tolkien fans in New York got a bit of a surprise last week after Gandalf himself crashed a midnight screening of 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'.

Cinema goers in the AMC Lincoln Square were settling down with their popcorn prior to show's start when out ambled Sir Ian McKellan himself, currently treading the boards in the Big Apple with best bud Sir Patrick Stewart.
