Kelly Clarkson was "pathetically alone" before she got married.

The former 'X Factor' USA winner, who has announced she's pregnant with her first child after marrying Brandon Blackstock, has spoken about her struggle to find love.

She told Parade magazine: "I was single for almost seven years. Every Christmas, it was like, 'Seriously, I'm still pathetically alone? Awesome. I'm still telling people I'm okay with it? I'm not."

The 'Stronger' singer admitted she only dated three men before music manager Brandon, who she married on October 20 in Tennessee.

The 31-year-old said: "Two of them were good, just not a good fit. I only had one real stinker that I wrote [music about] and made a lot of money off of."

But now she's in love and starting her own family, as well as relishing the role of stepmother to Brandon's children, Savannah, 11, and Seth, seven.

The brunette star also says she isn't worried about piling on the pounds during her own pregnancy.

She said: "I've never been Gisele Bündchen, so ain't nobody expectin' that! I like to set a [low] standard so people don't expect a lot," adding, "Everybody calls me fat all the time, so I can't wait to have a reason, instead of everybody just being a jerk."

It's also emerged that Adele warned Clarkson not to have a baby too early.

The 'Someone Like You' hitmaker welcomed a son, Angelo, with Simon Konecki in October 2012 and has been taking an extended break from music ever since, so she was quick to remind fellow singer Kelly that becoming a mother might affect her career.

Kelly admits she paid no attention to her new pal Adele's words of wisdom.

She said: "I ran into her at the Grammys last year, and I was like, 'So, when is your next album coming out?' She knows now I'm a superfan. She's so sweet.

"She's my big favourite to work with just because I'm a huge fan. She told me she was a big fan, too, and gave me some advice.

"She said, 'Girl, don't have a baby 'cause everything else will go on the back burner. I'm so happy living in babyland.' "
