Irish surfer nominated for 'Wipeout of the Year' award

A prestigious surf magazine has shortlisted six epic wipeouts for its annual poll - and there's an Irish guy on the list.

Irish surfer nominated for 'Wipeout of the Year' award

It's one word of surfing lingo we're all familiar with - the wipeout.

And every year, the world's top surfing magazine hands out an award for the Worst Wipeout of the year.

And this year - as the poll is open to a public vote for the first time - an Irish guy is among the six shortlisted.

Peter Craig from Bundoran Surf Company caught a mouthful of seawater in the below clip filmed at Mullaghmore in Co Sligo at Halloween.

"It's pretty much par for the course," Peter said of his epic wipeout.

"You just pick yourself up and dust yourself off again."

The Derry-born boardsman is currently picking up twice as many votes as any of his five competitors, but says winning the award would be bittersweet.

"I'd love to win but wouldn't be able to afford to get to Hawaii to pick it up," he said.

"But of course, if any companies out there want to sponsor me I'm all ears."
