Mixed fortunes for X Factor contestants on big band night

Tonight’s episode of The X Factor saw the acts step well outside their comfort zone and take on big band tunes in front of the judges.
Apart from stretching their vocal cords, the contestants also stepped up the style stakes with tuxedos, evening wear and props all around.

Abi Alton sang ‘That’s Life’, Sam Bailey took on ‘New York, New York’ while Nicky tried his hand at the classic ‘Dream a Little Dream’.
Luke Friend, however, was told by the judges that his style didn’t fit the big band theme, and that he was constantly ahead of the beat in his rendition of ‘Moondance’.
Hannah Barrett gave a solid performance of ‘It’s a Man’s World’ to impress the judges, as did Rough Copy with ‘Hit the Road, Jack’ – bedecked in kilts.

Tamera took on a less classical approach with ‘Cry Me River’, which the judges said had issues – but praised her for her potential.
Sam Callahan, after a difficult judge’s reaction last week, faced a much softer response after trying his best on ‘Ain’t That a Kick in the Head’.
But perhaps the most exciting part of the show was the opening shot, where Peter Dickson, otherwise known as The X Factor Voiceover Man, appeared in the flesh on our screens.
