Simpsons pays touching tribute to Mrs Krabappel in opening sequence

Following the news that Simpsons cast member Marcia Wallace – who played the role of Mrs Krabappel – passed away, the show aired this wonderful little tribute to their colleague on last night's primetime spot.

In a nice little touch, Fox aired the 1992 episode '"Bart the Lover" before the new episode, which focuses entirely on the personal life of Edna Krabappel and even won an Emmy, according to Uproxx.

Simpsons staff have also come out to clarify that although they announced a character would be deliberately killed off in this series, they had not planned on it being Marcia Wallace's character.
