Marcia Wallace, the voice of teacher Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, has died.

Marcia Wallace, the voice of teacher Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, has died.

Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said that her death is a terrible loss. He added that Wallace’s “irreplaceable character”.

The TV actress’ credits ranged from playing a wise-cracking receptionist on The Bob Newhart Show to appearances on Candice Bergin’s Murphy Brown.

Edna Krabappel is Bart Simpson's teacher at Springfield Elementary School and later became the wife of Ned Flanders.

Krabappel was the only character voiced by Wallace on the show regularly.

The Simpsons producers now intend to retire the character following Wallace's death.
