Down Syndrome cheerleader wins another battle
Meet 16 year-old Brittany Davila, an honorary member of the Deer Park High School cheerleading squad who wanted nothing more than to cheer her team from the sidelines.
She has finally been allowed to return to her rightful place on the field after a decision to make her cheer in the stands because of her condition was overturned.
Brittany caused national headlines in the States after being told she could not cheer during games because she was a âliabilityâ.
Being an honorary member means Brittany doesnât go to competitions or take part in stunts, however she loves nothing more then to cheer on her school with the rest of her squad.
At a recent volleyball match things changed when she was told to support her team from the stands.
âShe doesnât understand why theyâre telling her she canât do it. âI donât know how to explain it to her.â
âIf the volleyball is going to fly off the court and hit somebody, itâs just as likely to hit somebody else as it is to hit her.â
âI know sheâs âdifferent,â but my whole thing is everybody should be treated the same, if thereâs something she canât do, then she just canât do it. But donât tell me she canât do it without even letting her try,â her mother Buffy Davila told KTRK.
Happily a solution has been found following a summit of Brittanyâs parents, the high school and the school district.
The school district commented in a statement that agreement took all of five minutes to satisfy all parties and Brittany was able to return to courtside this past weekend.
She was even back barking orders at her squad during practice, âShe helps us stay on track. If we are talking sheâs like, âGet in lineâ. âSheâs perfect for this, this is what she was made to do,â said her follow cheerleader Sara Washington.
Brittanyâs school mates are so pleased to have her back that she has been chosen as class representative for her schoolâs Homecoming.
