Will Smith is in talks for the 'Independence Day' sequel.

The 44-year-old actor is set to have discussions to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller, a US Marine Corps pilot who is part of the VMFA-314 squadron in the sci-fi film.

Director Roland Emmerich told Digital Spy.com: "I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it [Independence Day] because he didn't want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

Before the release of Smith's latest film 'After Earth' Emmerich said Smith was "too expensive" to return, even though he was hoping to cast a few familiar faces from the original movie.

He previously said: "Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name.

"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new."

Bill Pullman who played US President Thomas J. Whitmore and Jeff Goldblum who was cast as computer expert David Levinson have been confirmed to return for the sequel.

The original film which was released in July 1996 grossed over $800m worldwide.
