We almost spat out our cornflakes when we saw the news this morning - dishy Darren (aka Robbie Sheehan) has been spotted on the set of Love/Hate Season 4.
The picture below was taken yesterday as Sheehan and other cast members filmed scenes in Clontarf, Dublin.
Much like us, Twitter was fairly nonplussed at the news:
Yep, the very same Darren - blue of hoody and bushy of eyebrow - whom we last saw lying in an ever-expanding pool of the red stuff behind a dingy block of Dublin flats, having just received a double-tap to the noggin from Lizzie in the thrilling and seagull-heavy finale of Season 3.
Lizzie, whose ardour for Darren was severely dampened after he managed to shoot dead her only surviving brother, and who apparently just bumped into the baby-faced hitman on her way back from the hairdressers.
So what's the story? How could Dazzler possibly have survived a cold-blooded execution? With seagulls and symbolism and stuff?
RTÉ are staying schtum on the matter, but we've been mulling it over and here's what we've come up with…
Stands to reason, right? Why else would Darren have worn itin S3? Yes, yes, he was on the run and kipping with Aido - a man for whom clean laundry is not a priority - but seriously… have you ever seen one man wear one item of clothing so much?
So the only person that didn't know how Lizzie felt about Darren (prior to him shooting Paddy, natch) was the Dazzler himself, no matter how much she gazed moodily at the picture of him on her phone.
Is it just us, or did you think the two would make a great match? Much more so than that damp squib Rosie - Lizzie UNDERSTANDS HIS TORMENT and is pretty handy with a 9mm, which is a useful trait in a girlfriend-of-Darren.
So picture this - Lizzie stands over her bleeding paramour, those Sheehan eyelashes flutter open and all of a sudden he understands, and sees how the act of shooting him twice in the head is the ultimate declaration of love. She cradles his head in her hands, her damp tears mingling with his blood and suddenly… all will be well.
Stuart Carolan? Yeah Stuart, you have our number.
Lizzie and Darren have joined the Inchicore Players and were rehearsing for an am-dram production of Reservoir Dogs.
Lizzie's very good, isn't she? She could be an actor, so she could.
Lizzie and Darren concocted an elaborate plan - involving movie-quality pyrotechnics, the origins of which are not quite explained - to allow them ride off into the sunset on the famed 'ferry', with both Nidge and Dano thinking that all loose ends are wrapped up, and going for a pint in Napper Tandy's.
Season 4 will see Darrena and Lizzie running a small fish restaurant on the Costa Brava… hilarity ensues when Lizzie can't get the hang of opening scallops. Their peace is shattered when Nidge sees Darren tagged in a photo on Facebook.
Lizzie: "Darren how could you do something so stupid?"
Darren: "Jaysus I thought he was still on Bebo!"
Lizzie: "NOBODY'S ON BEBO!!!"
All things considered, this is about the only plausible explanation on this list.
Darren isn't actually back from the dead, and Robbie Sheehan's involvement in Season 4 has something to do with a flashback of some description.
That's probably it.
