Remember Bonnie and Clyde? Well there's a new update from AHAR

You might remember our story about Bonnie and Clyde back in January .

The inseparable pair had suffered third degree burns before being found by volunteers from the good folks at Animal Heaven, Animal Rescue (AHAR) on the side of a road in Kerry.

Their plight at the time led to a huge spike in donations to AHAR, which is based just outside Killarney and is run by a team of volunteers.

Now, less than six weeks later, the organisation has announced plans to purchase and develop its own state of the art animal rescue centre.

Founded by Suzanne Gibbons in 1991, AHAR as expanded gradually but is still 100% run by volunteers. She explained of the new development plans: “We have identified a suitable property and have agreed a price with the owner. To make our dream a reality we have to raise €100,000 which will allow us to secure a mortgage on the property and we will now be commencing a major fund-raising drive to come up with this and will be looking for animal lovers everywhere to support us. We have recently applied to Revenue for Charity Status which is important for us in terms of future development.”

As for Bonnie and Clyde, they found a home soon after our story on January 22, and according to Tom O’Shea from AHAR, they are getting on great in their new home.

O’Shea added of their future fundraising plans: ““As with any purchase there are timelines that have to be met and our immediate priority is to raise the €20,000 deposit that will secure the property for us. With this in mind we will be hosting a Sponsored Dog Walk in Killarney National Park on Sunday April 21st which will be led out by our Patron, internationally renowned musician Sharon Shannon. This will be followed by a concert in the Gleneagle Hotel by top comedian Jon Kenny on Saturday May 4.”

If you would like to help in any way, either as a volunteer at the centre or with the fundraising efforts please contact Tom O’Shea on 083 1759327 or by email at tom@ahar.ie
