“They dry-humping air”

The Harlem Shake craze is not going down well in Harlem.

Residents of the New York borough that has given its name to the dance sensation that's been sweeping the internet have been offering their opinions on film.

They're not fans.

"Yeah I know the Harlem Shake but that ain't the Harlem Shake!

(SchleppFilms via YouTube)

“They don’t come from Harlem. They come from strange planet.”

“People making a fool of themselves rubbing on each other."

“They’re disrespecting Harlem swag, number one. Harlem wouldn’t be dressing like this.”

Harlemites seem peeved that the 2013 Harlem Shake - based on a 30-second clip of a dance track by Brooklyn-based producer Baauer bears little relation to the Harlem Shake as they know it - a dance that started in the neighbourhood in the early 80s and was popularised by hip-hop artists.

Also known as the albee, it's roots come from an traditional Ethiopian dance called the eskista.

So not a lot to do with large crowds of excitable students, office workers, Norwegian soldiers and sea mammals writhing around in sleeping bags and stormtrooper masks.
