Matt Smith has vowed to remain on 'Doctor Who'.

The 29-year-old actor - who plays the Time Lord in the BBC One sci-fi drama - explained while he had known "for a while" that his co-star Karen Gillan would be departing her role as the doctor's faithful assistant Amy Pond, he will not be following in her footsteps and quitting the show.

Speaking on the Christmas special of BBC One's 'The Graham Norton Show', he said: "I am very happy to stay. I love it. I'll miss Karen because she's my best mate. She's mad as a box of cats, but a firecracker.

"But there comes a time when a story concludes - and the essence of the show is that it constantly reinvents itself."

Karen - who will leave 'Doctor Who' at the end of the next series alongside her onscreen husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) - is to bow out of the show in a "heartbreaking" storyline.

Showrunner Steven Moffat recently said: "The Ponds will be rejoining us next series.

"But the final days of the Ponds are coming, I am not telling you when and I won't say how. But that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."
