The Prodigy have been unveiled as the final headliner for next year’s Download festival.

The Prodigy have been unveiled as the final headliner for next year’s Download festival.

The ‘Firestarter’ hitmakers will top the bill at the annual music event alongside previously-announced acts Metallica – who will perform their 1991 self-titled album in its entirety – and reunited Black Sabbath.

Confirming their appearance, the group wrote on their Facebook page: "We have chosen to headline Download Festival as our only uk festival show next year.

"We will be playin some new songs for the first time from our next album due later 2012 ........ see you there - Liam, Keef & Maxim (sic)".

The Prodigy will headline on the opening night of the festival, June 8, with Metallica topping the bill on the Saturday and Black Sabbath closing the event – which takes place in Donington Park, Leicestershire, England – the following night.

Further line-up announcements are expected to be made in the coming weeks.

Tickets for Download 2012 go on sale tomorrow (at 9am.
